The Air Navigation Commission of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) reviewed a proposal for the establishment of Regional Aviation Safety Groups (RASGs) in four (04) different ICAO regions namely; Pan America, Europe, Middle East and Africa with an objective to further improve aviation’s successful safety performance while maintaining a high level of capacity and efficiency. As a result of this initiative the Regional Aviation Safety Group-Asia Pacific Region (RASG-APAC) was initiated following an ICAO Council decision in May 2010 to develop and implement a regional performance framework for the management of safety on the basis of Global Aviation Safety Plan (GASP) and the Global Safety Roadmap (GASR). The inaugural meeting of RASG-APAC was held at Nemea, New Caledonia from 10 to 11 October 2011 with the participation of 33 Member States/Administrations.
The group focus on addressing Flight Safety issues at a Regional Level. In order to develop and implement the work programme of the meeting the group selects a Chairperson for a term of three (03) years from the Member States. Chief Executive Officer, Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia Mr. John McCornick was elected as the first Chairperson of the group. The fourth consecutive meeting of RASG-APAC was held from 20-21 November 2014 in Hong Kong, China. Director General of Civil Aviation & Chief Executive Officer, Mr. H.M.C. Nimalsiri was selected as the Chairperson of the group for a term of three years. This provides Sri Lanka with a valuable and interactive platform to expand the States’ presence in the aviation industry as well to obtain an insight into safety critical matters in the Region. Mr. Nimalsiri also serves as the 2nd chair of the Air Navigation Planning and Implementation Regional Group of Asia Pacific Region (APANPIRG).
